Founded in 1943 by Henry “Hank” Gustafson and Norman Johnson, Rockford Molded began as a small tool and die shop operating from a garage on 18th Avenue in Rockford, Illinois. During World War II, the company contributed to the war effort by manufacturing components for the U.S. Army, joining many other manufacturers in the Rockford region in supporting critical defense needs. As manufacturing technologies evolved, Hank and Norman demonstrated remarkable innovation by designing and building their first injection molding machine from the ground up in the 1950s. This pioneering achievement positioned Rockford Molded among the first five injection molding companies in the Midwest, establishing a legacy of technical excellence and forward-thinking manufacturing. In the early 1970s, Norman retired and sold his ownership interest to Hank, who continued to guide the company’s growth. By the end of the decade, Hank passed leadership of the business to his three sons—Doug, Gerald, and Craig—ensuring the continuation of the values and reputation that had been carefully built over decades. A strong advocate for family ownership, Hank believed that maintaining Rockford Molded as a family-operated company was essential to preserving its commitment to quality, integrity, and customer service—a principle that remains central to the company’s identity today.
